Lake Erie Coastal

Programs

The Ohio Coastal Management Program (OCMP) integrates management of Ohio's Lake Erie coast in order to preserve, protect, develop, restore and enhance the state's valuable and sometimes vulnerable coastal resources. Following the guidelines set forth in the OCMP, various other programs and plans function to carry out OCMP goals.

  • Lake Erie Education and Outreach Program
    • We envision...  a Lake Erie-literate citizenry applying what they have learned through education and training  to make wise decisions  and take personal actions  that create a healthier Lake Erie.
    • Lake Erie Literacy Principles and Concepts  - Lake Erie Literacy is an understanding of Lake Erie's influence on you and your influence on the freshwater lake.

Building an understanding of the connections between individual human actions, government policies, economic decisions and their effects on natural Earth systems is a critical component of environmental literacy. Fostering connections between self and the environment in a local context within the social framework of one’s community and the associated regional resources makes literacy lessons more powerful and longer lasting.

  • Coastal and Estuarine Land Conservation Program (CELCP)
    • CELCP helps protect coastal and estuarine lands considered important for their ecological, conservation, recreational, historical or aesthetic value or that are threatened by conversion from a natural or recreational state to other uses. The program provides federal funding for projects that ensure conservation of these areas for the benefit of future generations, and that can be effectively managed and protected.

  • Lake Erie Shore Erosion Management Plan (LESEMP)
    • The Lake Erie Shore Erosion Management Plan (LESEMP) is a voluntary, non-regulatory initiative developed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) to aid property owners with their efforts to control lake-based erosion.  By viewing erosion on a regional scale, the LESEMP products are able to incorporate several characteristics of the Ohio coast, including shore and nearshore geology, as well as habitat for a myriad of species.

  • Coastal Nonpoint Pollution Control Program
    • Nonpoint source pollution, which includes habitat alteration, is now responsible for most water quality problems in Lake Erie and its tributaries. The CNPCP seeks to address nonpoint sources of pollution throughout Ohio's Lake Erie Watershed.

  • Coastal Training Program
    • The Ohio Coastal Training Program (CTP) is a partnership of four programs that collaborate to conduct research, provide education and manage the natural resources of the Lake Erie coastal region. The Ohio CTP supports events that bring scientists, practitioners, and local decision-makers together to share challenges, innovative science and technologies, and success stories.

  • Ohio Clean Marinas Program
    • The Ohio Clean Marinas Program is a proactive partnership designed to encourage marinas and boaters to use simple, innovative solutions to keep Ohio's coastal and inland waterway resources clean. The Program assists these operators in protecting the resources that provide their livelihood - clean water and fresh air.
