Middle Bass Island
The nearly 2-acre Petersen Woods and 20-acre Kuehnle State Wildlife Area are adjacent to each other on Deist Road where Middle Bass narrows, just north of the island’s airport.

Kuehnle State Wildlife Area is called “The Marsh” by islanders. The site features a large wetland and marsh-swamp suitable for bird watching and photography. The habitat provides a resting area for songbirds, raptors, waterfowl and wading birds that migrate across western Lake Erie. It also harbors a number of threatened and endangered plants, rare salamanders, Blandings turtles and the Lake Erie watersnake. The triangular-shaped wildlife area has two sides fronting Lake Erie. The 0.28-mile north side overlooks North Bass Island. The 0.25-mile southeast side affords views of South Bass and Kelleys islands. Both shores are structurally reinforced with dikes and accessible for fishing.
