Constructed between 1912 and 1915 by a commission of nine states and the federal government, Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial was built to commemorate the United States naval triumph in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812 and to celebrate the long-lasting peace between Great Britain, Canada and the United States. The 352-foot tall Doric column is the third tallest U.S. memorial and is just 5 miles south of the US-Canada border, the longest undefended international border in the world.

Six officers slain during the battle are buried under the memorial’s rotunda. Its observation platform is 317 feet above Lake Erie. An elevator takes visitors to the platform from where, on a clear day, one can see Cleveland’s skyline 60 miles to the east.

The 23.9 acres of park grounds span the width of the South Bass Island at its narrowest point. Both the north and south sides have poured concrete seawalls with flat tops which one can walk or sit on and enjoy the view.

In 1936, the memorial became part of the National Park Service. The park’s Visitor Center, opened in 2002, hosts interpretative displays, reenactment movies and a book store. Beginning in 2010, the memorial column will be closed for approximately 2 years for restoration. The visitor center and park grounds will remain open and park staff will offer new interpretive tours.
