The nearly 2-acre Petersen Woods and 20-acre Kuehnle State Wildlife Area are adjacent to each other on Deist Road where Middle Bass narrows, just north of the island’s airport.

Petersen Woods has 300 feet of road frontage but narrows as it approaches the water and has just a 98 foot shore. The woods provide habitat for mammals, song and wading birds and the Lake Erie watersnake. Future site plans include nature trails, a boardwalk and observation platform; however, as of March 2010 the site had no amenities. A sign on Deist Road identifies the site which was acquired in 2004 by the Black Swamp Conservancy’s Lake Erie Islands Chapter.
