ODNR and Grocers Association Work to Make Plastic Bag Recycling Simple
COLUMBUS, OH - In recognition of Earth Week, a time when Ohioans celebrate the earth's resources and discuss environmental issues and solutions, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) helped announce the launch of a statewide campaign to simplify plastic bag recycling.
ODNR Division of Recycling and Litter Prevention and the Ohio Grocers Association (OGA) today announced the coordination of the Plastic Bag Recycling Program. Through the program, OGA provides recycling bins to its retail members. In turn, the stores collect plastic from consumers, as well as their own pallets and shrink-wrap. The program was developed in partnership with ODNR Division of Recycling and Litter Prevention and major wholesalers.
"This project makes good business sense and good environmental sense," said ODNR Director Sean Logan. "It saves money, saves resources and makes it easier for grocery customers to do the right thing."
The statewide program provides a convenient way for Ohioans to share the responsibility of conservation and recycle their plastic bags.
"We are making this initiative a statewide event because plastic bag recycling is an important step in ensuring that the government does not tell us how to bag groceries," said Ohio Grocers Association President Tom Jackson.
The announcement of the Plastic Bag Recycling Program was made at Hills Market in Columbus, a site that is participating in the program.
The ODNR Division of Recycling & Litter Prevention is responsible for implementing statewide waste reduction, recycling, recycling market development and litter prevention programs. The division encourages Ohioans to reduce waste, recycle materials and buy recycled-content products. For more information, visit www.ohiodnr.com.
