ODNR to Present Program on Monarch Butterflies

Butterflies to be tagged for research - families invited to participate

WEST UNION, OHIO
—Monarch butterflies, enjoyed by many in backyards, nature preserves and parks all across the eastern United States, are preparing for their annual migration to the mountains of Mexico. In an effort to learn more about this amazing journey, researchers in several states are now tagging these small but determined fliers and asking the public for their assistance.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Natural Areas and Preserves will be conducting a free educational program on monarch butterflies at Chaparral Prairie State Nature Preserve on Saturday, September 12 at 1 p.m. The public is invited to participate as professional naturalists offer a presentation on the amazing life history of the monarch and then offer a unique opportunity to participate in the research by capturing, tagging and releasing butterflies at the state nature preserve.

The program is free, suitable for all ages, and will be held rain or shine at Chaparral Prairie State Nature Preserve, 209 Hawk Hill Road, West Union, Ohio. GPS coordinates are N38°50.422’ W083°34.427’. For more information about the program, please call 937-544-9750.
