Sheldon Marsh Hosts NatureCache Event
Outdoor series sponsored by Gander Mountain and ODNR
COLUMBUS, OH – NatureCache is coming to Erie County. The new series combines naturalist-led interpretive hikes with global positioning system (GPS) technology. The next NatureCache hike is scheduled for Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve on Saturday, September 26 at 10 a.m.
Sheldon Marsh is located along Lake Erie’s southern shore. The water, shore and surrounding upland of this 463-acre site provides unique habitats for nearly 300 species of birds. Numbers are greatest in the spring and fall when migrating birds stop to rest before or after crossing Lake Erie. The site also protects one of the last remaining barrier beaches in the Lake Erie region.
Suitable for the entire family, the event will introduce participants to virtual geocaching, an activity encouraged at a number of Ohio state nature preserves. Armed with demonstration GPS units, visitors will have an opportunity to explore the diverse habitats of this Lake Erie coastal wetland preserve. For more information, call 440-839-1561.
NatureCache 2009 is sponsored by Gander Mountain Company, the nation’s largest retail network of stores for hunting, fishing, camping, boating, marine, and outdoor lifestyle products and services, in conjunction with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Natural Areas and Preserves.
The final NatureCache event will be held at Lawrence Woods State Nature Preserve in Hardin County on October 3.
Pre-registration is strongly encouraged but not necessary to attend. All pre-registered participants (over the age of 18) will be entered into a prize drawing for two Garmin GPS units, compliments of Gander Mountain.
