PEREGRINE FALCONS HATCH LIVE ON DIVISION OF WILDLIFE FALCONCAM

COLUMBUS, OH – Peregrine falcon chicks are beginning to hatch in downtown Columbus, and wildlife enthusiasts can watch all of the activity live on the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife’s Falcon Cam

The first of four peregrine falcon eggs in a nest box on the 41st floor of the Rhodes State Office Tower hatched overnight between May 12 and 13, revealing a white, down-covered falcon chick.  The remaining eggs should hatch over the next few days.  Meanwhile, Scout, the adult female falcon, will continue to incubate the eggs as Orville, the male, brings food items to the nest.

Wildlife biologist, Donna Daniel, reported that at about 1:00 p.m. Monday, May 12, FalconCam watchers noticed a pip in one of the falcons’ eggs.  “A pip is the first hole a chick makes in the eggshell as it begins the long hatching process,” said Daniel.  “Monday’s pip was a great indication that we would have a successful hatch this year.”

The continuing hatch, growing, and eventual fledging of Columbus’ peregrine chicks can be monitored through live video feed on the Ohio Division of Wildlife’s FalconCam.  While logged on, falcon enthusiasts can read up on action at the nest on Donna Daniel’s falcon blog

Ohio's peregrine falcon program is supported by the state income tax check-off program, donations to the Wildlife Diversity & Endangered Species Fund, and sales of the cardinal license plate.  Donations can also be made at www.wildohio.com. License plates may be purchased from local deputy registrars or by calling 1-888-PLATES3.

Matching federal funds are provided through the State Wildlife Grant Program for this project and other wildlife diversity efforts of the Division of Wildlife that target species of greatest conservation need.
