Turkey Hunting Regulations
SEASON DATES: April 22 through May 19, 2002.
SHOOTING HOURS: 1/2 hour before sunrise to noon.
BAG LIMIT: One turkey with visible beard. Hunter possessing a special bonus turkey permit may take a second bearded turkey. Only one turkey may be taken per day.
CHECKING: All hunters who bag a wild turkey must register their bird at an official check station. Refer to the center section of this leaflet.
LEGAL HUNTING DEVICES: Shotgun or muzzleloading shotgun (10 gauge or smaller) using shot; longbow (draw weight 40 pounds or more) or crossbow (draw weight 75-200 pounds).
OPEN COUNTIES: All 88 counties are open.
LICENSE AND PERMIT REQUIREMENTS: All turkey hunters must possess a valid Ohio hunting license -- $15.00 resident, $91.00 nonresidents -- (unless legally exempted) and a valid turkey permit. A turkey permit costs $20.00 and has one tag; a turkey permit and special bonus permit costs $40.00 and has 2 tags. Most hunters exempt from having a hunting license are also exempt from having a turkey permit.
PROHIBITED METHODS: It is unlawful to take more than one turkey per day.
It is unlawful to hunt turkeys over bait.
It is unlawful to use a live decoy while hunting turkeys.
It is unlawful to use electronic calling devices while hunting turkeys.
It is unlawful to take or attempt to take a wild turkey while it is in a tree.
GENERAL INFORMATION: Written permission must be obtained from the landowner or tenant before entering any private lands to hunt.
Because of potential disease problems and genetic pollution, it is illegal to possess live wild turkeys without a permit. For the same reason, domestic or pen-raised turkeys may not be released into the wild.
Due to the potential for spread of disease, it is also recommended that turkeys not be artificially fed. Providing standing corn, wheat or clover patches is a much better alternative.
