2011 Fall Catchable Trout Releases in Ohio

Castalia State Fish Hatchery Renovation Reduces Fall Trout Stocking

The Division of Wildlife’s annual stockings of put-and-take rainbow trout will all be significantly reduced this fall due to renovation of the Castalia State Fish Hatchery, which required temporary changes in the annual fish production schedule.

The total number of trout available for stocking this fall is reduced from 25,000 to 4,000 fish. The 4,000 fish will be stocked during October at Stonelick Lake in Clermont County, the Ohio-Erie Canal in Cuyahoga County, and Sycamore State Park Pond located in Montgomery County.

Renovation of the Castalia State Fish Hatchery will ensure the future of Ohio’s steelhead trout fishing as well as put-and-take rainbow trout fishing.  Facility improvements include a new building where eggs are hatched and young fish are raised, covered raceways where fish can grow to larger sizes, high-volume water pumps, and state-of-the art water quality monitors.

Each year the Division stocks 400,000 steelhead in the tributaries of Lake Erie and 110,000 put-and-take rainbow trout in waters throughout the state.  All steelhead are produced at the Castalia State Fish Hatchery as well as many of the put-and-take rainbow trout.  The hatchery renovation is expected to be completed this fall.  Anglers can expect the numbers of put-and take rainbow trout stocked during spring 2012 to be similar to previous years.

A five fish daily bag limit is in effect for all the stocked water areas.
