HIT THE TRAIL

FOR THE 39TH ANNUAL WINTER HIKE
AT HOCKING HILLS STATE PARK

Saturday, January 17

Governor Bob Taft, ODNR Director Sam Speck, and other outdoor enthusiasts will hit the trail.

Pursue your New Year’s resolution of a healthier lifestyle by participating in the 39th Annual Winter Hike at Hocking Hills State Park.  Enjoy the area’s rugged, winter beauty on this popular scenic six-mile trek from Old Man’s Cave to Ash Cave.

Gather at the Old Man's Cave parking lot prior to 9 a.m. where groups of hikers will start down the trail to Ash Cave at regular intervals until 11 a.m.  Along the way, interpreters will be available to discuss the history and nature of the area. The hike is expected to take about five hours.

Mid-way through the hike, a hearty lunch of bean soup, cornbread and hot chocolate will be available at Cedar Falls for a small donation.  Park officials will provide return transportation from Ash Cave to Old Man's Cave following the event.

Located in southeastern Ohio, this seasonal tradition attracts thousands of hikers from across the state.  Layered clothing and good footwear are recommended.  The hike takes place regardless of the weather.

For an extra treat this year, you can join park staff at 5 p.m. on Friday, January 16 for a short, twilight stroll into Ash Cave.  Then at 7 p.m., warm up by the fire inside the Hocking Hills dining lodge for other activities, including games and refreshments.

Hocking Hills State Park is located on State Route 664 in Hocking County, about 12 miles southwest of Logan. For further information about the Annual Winter Hike, call the park office at (740) 385-6841.
