Public fishing opportunities will be enhanced this spring when more than 80,700 rainbow trout, each measuring 10 to 13 inches long, are released into 48 Ohio lakes and ponds, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. The releases will take place between mid-March and mid-May; anglers are reminded that the daily catch limit for inland lakes is five trout.

COLLEGE CORNER, OHIO - Young turkey hunters will be able to take advantage of a permit only Youth Turkey Hunt at Hueston Woods State Park during the 2011 spring turkey season. Hunters 17 years of age and younger, accompanied by a non-hunting adult, are eligible to apply to hunt specified zones within the park May 7, 2011.

One change was proposed to the deer hunting regulations for 2011-12, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife. The proposed change is to move Fayette County from Deer Zone B to Zone A.

Increased evidence of bobcats living in Ohio’s southeastern counties continues with the confirmation of 106 sightings by state wildlife officials during 2010, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife. The reports show an increase from the 92 verified sightings in 2009.

One hundred sixty-four black bear sightings were reported in Ohio last year, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife. Of that number, state wildlife personnel confirmed 64 of those sightings, an increase compared to the 51 confirmed sightings in 2009.

COLUMBUS, OH- Eight Ohioans recently received a combined $2,420 in rewards for reporting wildlife violations to the Turn-In-a-Poacher (TIP) hotline, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife. As a result of these calls, 31 people were convicted of poaching wildlife, including white-tailed deer and wild turkeys, and fined a total of $20,621 by Ohio courts.

OAK HARBOR, OH - A pair of bald eagles have built a nest behind the Sportsmen’s Migratory Bird Center at Magee Marsh Wildlife Area. To protect the birds and the nest, one loop of the Walking Trail will be closed beginning February 1, 2011 until further notice.

Wildlife Officer Keller’s new assignment follows the promotion of former Lake County wildlife officer Tom Rowan to Law Enforcement Supervisor in northeast Ohio.
