AKRON, OH – The scorching summer temperatures are finally winding down, but the fish bite in northeast Ohio is heating up according to the ODNR Division of Wildlife. Fish are just coming out of their summer feeding slumps and fishing now can be as good as traditional springtime opportunities.

AKRON, OH- Youth dove hunting will be permitted on portions of the Mosquito Creek Wildlife Refuge by permit for the 2011-2012 season. Access to this portion of the property is restricted to permit-only hunting. The refuge is not open to the public otherwise.

AKRON, OH – The Ohio Division of Wildlife will hold a public drawing for controlled waterfowl daily hunting permits on Thursday, September 22, 2011for portions of Killbuck Marsh Wildlife Area. The drawing will be held at the Wayne County Fairgrounds Pavilion, 199 Vanover Street in Wooster.

AKRON, OH – Young anglers still have two more weekends including Labor Day to enjoy the Division of Wildlife’s youth fishing area in the Portage Lakes of Akron. Occupying the grounds of the old Akron fish hatchery, the youth fishing ponds are open to anglers 15 and under through the Labor Day holiday on September 5. Equipment, bait, and assistance are provided at no charge thanks to the purchases of Ohio fishing licenses and federal contributions from the Sportfish Restoration Fund.

AKRON, OH – The Ohio Division of Wildlife and the City of Akron invites waterfowl hunters to participate in a special drawing on Thursday, September 15, 2011 for hunting at LaDue Reservoir. Registration at the Geauga County Fairgrounds will begin at 5:30 p.m. and the drawing will follow promptly at 6:00 p.m. There is no fee for applying. Hunters will place registration cards in a drum, names will be drawn for available dates and blinds, and first drawn will receive first choice.

AKRON, OH- Public shooting ranges operated by the State of Ohio are located statewide, allowing hunters to practice their shooting skills for the upcoming season.  In northeast Ohio, six different counties including Harrison, Jefferson, Medina, Portage, and Trumbull offer rifle, pistol, shotgun, or archery ranges.

The newer Growing Up WILD (for ages 3-7 years) and traditional Project WILD (K-12) guidebooks will both be provided at no charge. All participants must stay for the duration of the program which is 10am-3pm on Tuesday, August 16th. The workshop will take place at Boardman Park also known as “The Green Oasis” at 375 Boardman-Poland Road.

AKRON, OH- The popular Youth Fishing Area located at the District 3 Division of Wildlife Office in Akron (Portage Lakes) will be closed temporarily. On June 25 and 26, crews will be paving the driveway and associated parking lots therefore no vehicle or foot traffic will be permitted.

CLEVELAND,OH – Wildlife biologists from the ODNR Division of Wildlife will be examining peregrine falcon chicks and placing identifying metal bands on their legs Wednesday, May 11th, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. A total of three chicks began hatching on April 23rd. A fourth egg failed to hatch. The falcon parents are Boomer (male) and S/W (female).
