DAYTON – Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife biologists have confirmed the incubation start at the peregrine falcon nest located atop the Liberty Bank Tower on Second Street in Downtown Dayton.  “The pair started incubating three eggs on March 23 and if successful they should hatch around April 24th,” said Diana Malas, wildlife biologist for the ODNR Division of Wildlife.  Peregrines typically lay between 3-5 eggs, so there is the potential for one or more to be laid by this pair after incubation has begun.

            WILMINGTON, OH – Ducks Unlimited (DU) and students from Wilmington High School braved cold weather in late February to help with maintenance on wood duck nesting boxes according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.  The boxes located at Cowan Lake State Park were in need of yearly repairs and cleaning.  Three new boxes were constructed and installed at the south end of the lake as well bringing the total to 25 nest boxes.

HILLSBORO, OH – Two men received restitution costs and fines in Hillsboro Municipal Court for  wildlife violations including taking deer in a closed season and providing false information to a check station according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.

HILLSBORO, OHIO - Young turkey hunters will be able to take advantage of a permit only Youth Turkey Hunt at Paint Creek State Park during the 2010 spring turkey season. Hunters 17 years of age and younger, accompanied by a non-hunting adult, are eligible to apply for a drawing to hunt within four specified zones April 17, 24 and May 1, 8 and 15th, 2010.

XENIA, OH -- A white-tailed deer harvested during the 2009 gun season in Highland County will be scored to see if it’s an Ohio record. If approved by   Buckeye Big Bucks Club (BBBC) scoring organization, it will rank as the number one non-typical rack ever taken with a muzzleloader in Ohio history and the 35 1/8 inch left and the 34 4/8 inch right main beams could be the longest ever recorded from a whitetail anywhere in the world, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.

XENIA, OH – Contrary to popular belief, coyotes are very common in Ohio and have been for quite some time. According to biologists of the ODNR Division of Wildlife, coyotes are not native to Ohio, but have been living in the Buckeye State for well over 80 years.

XENIA, OH – A small black bear, probably a one and a half year-old, is currently wandering in the Warren County area according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. Biologists tracking this bear believe it is a young male on a quest to establish its own territory. As bear populations expand in neighboring states, Ohio will see Buckeye bear populations continue to increase.
