New State Wildlife Officers Begin Field Assignments
Delaware, Logan, Mahoning, Medina, Meigs, Monroe and Scioto counties get new State Wildlife Officers
COLUMBUS, OH - Seventeen new state wildlife officers were recently sworn in at a ceremony in Columbus, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife. The 17 state wildlife officers were hired from a pool of more than 500 applicants.
Wildlife officers have statewide jurisdiction to enforce wildlife regulations, investigate allegations of waterway pollution, protect state property and make arrests. They also conduct educational programs, advise landowners on dealing with wildlife and keep local agencies and conservation organizations updated on wildlife projects and regulations.
Following completion of the 16-week Ohio Peace Officer Basic Training course on May 1, the cadets were provided with nine weeks of additional specialized training by the ODNR Division of Wildlife. In addition to wildlife law enforcement procedures and agency policies, the cadets received training in areas such as wildlife and fish management, communications, public relations, administration, education, hunter safety and special projects.
