Lake Milton Gets More “Structured”
Ohio Division of Wildlife adds structure to local reservoir

LAKE MILTON, OH- Late summer fishing can be tough! Add to this, bad weather, boat problems, and uncooperative fish, any or all of which can cause frustration for anglers. Thanks to the efforts from Ohio Division of Wildlife Fish Management crews, boat anglers who fish Mahoning County’s Lake Milton will find a few more “honey holes” soon.

structure placementSeventy wooden spools (weighed down with stone) were introduced along the western edge of the lake to serve as structure for fish. “We’ve identified Milton as a good candidate for this type of placement since the panfish population is pretty good.” says Matt Wolfe, fisheries biologist for Ohio Division of Wildlife, who oversees the project. “The idea is that the fish will associate with these structures helping to ensure anglers will have a successful day of fishing.” added Wolfe.

The wooden spools can be found at the following locations:
 20 structures at N 41o 4’ 42.9” / W 80o 59’ 28.0”
 20 structures at N 41o 5’ 1.0” / W 80o 59’ 29.4”
 20 structures at N 41o 4’ 46.3” / W 80o 59’ 32.8”
 10 structures at N 41o 4’ 54.7” / W 80o 59’ 31.2”

All of the structures are in about eight to 10 feet of water. The map datum on your GPS unit should be set at NAD 83 to find the structures.

The goal of this project is to introduce 500 structures into the waters of northeastern Ohio annually. With limited funding available, none of this would be possible without the help of local organizations who have contributed to this effort. First Energy Corporation partnered up with Ohio Division of Wildlife on this particular project in its attempt to recruit the next generation of anglers and retain the anglers who already enjoy the sport of fishing.
