Poacher Pays $5,746.30 for Illegally Killing Two Antlered Deer in One Season

PARMA, OH – A Cuyahoga County man convicted of illegally taking two antlered deer in the 2009 deer hunting season has been ordered to pay restitution of $5,628.30 according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.  The revised restitution law went into effect March 2008 and allows the ODNR Division of Wildlife to seek an increased recovery value on all illegally harvested wildlife.

Gary R. Blakeney, Jr., 24, of Parma, pled no contest in Parma Municipal Court to one charge of taking a second antlered deer during the 2009 deer season. Blakeney will pay $5,746.30 in fines, restitution, and additional court costs. He was ordered to serve five years probation and hunting privileges were suspended for three years. Additionally, the court ordered both deer to be forfeited to the State of Ohio.

Many investigations and surveillance operations are the result of concerned citizen reports and calls to the Turn-In-a-Poacher hotline. Callers can leave information on the TIP line 24 hours a day and the information may be left anonymously. To report a wildlife violation, call 1-800-POACHER, a county wildlife officer or submit information online
