Going “Green” to Make an Angler’s Dream
Recycled holiday trees replenished at popular site

shoreline AKRON, OH- As the temperatures rise across Northeast Ohio, the holiday season is the last thing on most people’s minds. However, thanks to a partnership between the Mahoning County Green Team and the Ohio Division of Wildlife, anglers who fish the Portage Lakes (Summit County) can benefit from a few of the holiday leftovers.

This past spring, crews from the Ohio Division of Wildlife placed 250 structurestree preparation into the PortageLakes. Each of these structures consisted of three recycled Holiday trees. “The trees attract panfish of all types, so instead of rotting away in a landfill, anglers can find some pretty good fishing by them.” says Matt Wolfe, fisheries biologist who oversees this project for the Division of Wildlife. “We placed tree structures in these locations 10 years ago, but they have decomposed over time. We felt as if we needed to reload these areas with new structures since anglers found these areas to be productive,” added Wolfe.

In total, 190 structures were placed outside the beach at Turkeyfoot Reservoir in about 10 to18 feet of water. If you have a GPS unit, the structures can be found from N 40o 58’ 10.0” / W 81o 32’ 35.0” to N 40o 58’ 16.5” / W 81o 32’ 51.8”. Also, and additional 60 structures can be found near the opening of MudLake from N 40o 58’ 8.1” / W 81o 31’ 56.5” to N 40o 58’ 10.4” / W 81o 31’ 59.9” to N 40o 58’ 11.2” / W 81o 32’ 2.8” in about 10 – 18 feet of water. The map datum on your GPS unit should be set at NAD 83 to find the structures and the coordinates provided are in degrees, minutes, and seconds.

tree preparation The goal of this project is to introduce 500 structures into the waters of Northeastern Ohio annually in order to recruit the next generation of anglers and retain the anglers who already enjoy the sport of fishing. These efforts came at minimal cost to the Division and its constituents since the holiday trees were recycled through the Mahoning County Green Team. A downloadable Google Earth file containing all of the structure placements throughout Northeast Ohio is available by contacting the Wildlife District Three office in Akron at (330) 644-2293.
