Waterfowl Hunting Opportunities at Magee Marsh Wildlife Area

Oak Harbor, OH - The Magee Marsh Wildlife Area will be providing several opportunities for sportsmen and women to hunt waterfowl during the 2011-2012 waterfowl season.  All hunters must provide their own transportation to their designated blind.  Boats are required to access all blinds. All boats must be operated at NO-WAKE speeds. Both electric and gas powered motors are permitted. All legal waterfowl may be hunted and all migratory waterfowl hunting laws are in effect. Additionally, it is unlawful for any person to buy, sell, or barter any Division of Wildlife issued controlled hunting, fishing, or trapping permit.

A special drawing will be held on Saturday, August 20 at 2:00 pm during the Lake Erie Waterfowler’s Festival, located at Magee Marsh Wildlife Area, for permits to hunt the area during the special teal and early goose season. Registration will be from 12:00 noon to 1:45 pm. Hunters must complete their registration card prior to the start of the drawing (only one card per hunter). Names will be drawn until all permits are filled. Teal/ Canada goose permits are transferable. This permit is valid for the entire hunt day. You may enter the marsh one hour before legal shooting time, but once you leave the marsh, you may not re-enter. Permittees can bring two additional guests. Teal and Canada geese may be taken. Additional information pertaining to this hunt can be obtained at the drawing.

Due to a wetland restoration and enhancement project on the Magee Marsh Wildlife Area this year, the usual computer drawn hunts will be replaced by postcard lottery drawings and a daily drawing for select hunting dates during the 2011-2012 waterfowl hunting season. Three separate postcard lottery drawings will be held; Youth hunts for hunters 15 years of age or younger during the statewide youth waterfowl hunting season (Y-15); Youth hunters 17 years of age or younger on opening day of the regular waterfowl season (Y-17), and Adult hunts. Adult permits will be issued from the second hunt day through October 29, 2011 on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Specific hunt dates will be determined in early September. All post card hunts are half-day hunts with shooting time ending at 12:00 noon. Issued hunt permits are NOT transferable. Applicants must apply for hunts separately, indicating on the top of the postcard for the particular hunt type (Y-15, Y-17 or Adult). 4 x 6 postcards are to be sent to the Wildlife District Two Office at 952 Lima Ave.; Findlay, OH 45840.  Please include the applicant’s name, address, and phone number.   All post cards must be post marked by Sept 1, 2011. Names will be drawn until dates and areas are filled. Permittees can bring one additional guest. However, adult hunters may only hunt once during the postcard drawing period. Once drawn, you will receive additional instructions in the mail pertaining to your hunt.  Boats are required to access all blinds. All boats must be operated at NO-WAKE speeds. Both electric and gas powered motors are permitted.

Beginning on Monday, October 31st (pending the waterfowl season dates), a daily drawing will be held at 5:15 am each hunt day.  Hunt days will be held Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday for the remaining available dates of the waterfowl hunting season. Permittees can bring two additional guests. The daily permit is valid for the entire day of the hunt. However, you may enter the marsh at any time, but once you leave the marsh, you may not re-enter.  Again, boats are required to access all blinds. All boats must be operated at NO-WAKE speeds. Both electric and gas powered motors are permitted.
