Grant To Assists Food pantry Donations in Southwest ohio
Division of Wildlife Partners with Safari Club International
XENIA, OH – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife and the Southwest Ohio Chapter of Safari Club International (SCI) are partnering through a grant program to assist with the processing costs associated with donating venison to a food banks.
“The Division of Wildlife is pleased to once again team up with SCI to benefit the people of southwest Ohio” stated David E. Kohler, Wildlife Management Supervisor for the Division’s southwest Ohio district. The Southwest Ohio Chapter of Safari Club International has funded venison donations in this area of the state for nearly ten years through their Hunters Feeding the Hungry program. In April of 2007 the chapter purchased a Polaris 700 ATV and donated it to the Division of Wildlife to help law enforcement officers curtail illegal ATV activity on the Edge of Appalachia lands in Adams County.
The grant program awards a subsidy grant to help to pay the processing fee on donated venison. The grant money awarded by the Division of Wildlife must be matched with funds generated or collected by the organization that receives the grant.
Venison that is donated to food banks must be processed by a state inspected and insured meat processor. Hunters wishing to donate their deer to a food bank are, in most cases, required to pay for the processing of the venison. Organizations such as Safari Club International, as well as private meat processors have helped absorb the cost of deer processing in some areas. The grant from the Division of Wildlife is intended to further help with the costs of venison processing.
In southwest Ohio Adams, Brown, and Hamilton counties will have meat processors participating in the program. Hunters can take venison to the processors listed below for processing under the grant program. Processing will be on a first come first serve basis. Hunters still have the option to pay a percentage of the processing cost if they wish. The monies from the grant will pay for a set number of deer at each of these locations. Hunters wishing to make a donation should contact the processor to see if funds are still available.
