“We moved the drawings for the opening day hunt up this year so that folks would be able to make their holiday plans and already know if they had been drawn for a spot at one of the controlled hunts on opening day and have the flexibility to arrive at the dove field at the time they desire” said David Kohler, Wildlife Management Supervisor for Wildlife District Five. He went on the say that the noon drawing time would allow hunters to go directly into the field once they are drawn on the September 2nd hunt. “ I would like to remind hunters that early September is generally very warm and that doves usually aren’t as active during the heat of the day, make sure you keep hydrated as you try to get your 15 bird limit” added Kohler.
Hunting hours for all hunts on District Five wildlife areas, controlled and non-controlled, are noon to sunset from Sept. 1-10, 2008. Hours are sunrise to sunset for the remainder of the dove hunting season. Accommodations will be provided to handicapped dove hunters that are selected for the controlled dove hunts. They should contact the staff at the wildlife areas.
In order to participate in the drawings hunters will be required to present a 2008-2009 hunting license and current HIP certification prior to the drawing. HIP certification is free and can be accomplished at any authorized license vendor.
Hunters are encouraged to call the Wildlife Area headquarters or the Wildlife District Five office at (937) 372-9261 for information on these controlled hunts, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
