COLUMBUS, OH - Shawn and Will Sexton, of Sexton Excavating in Jackson, were named the 2007 Appalachian Regional Logger of the Year in recognition of excellence in environmentally-friendly harvesting practices, business operations, employee safety training and for their community contributions.

Sexton Excavating is an Ohio Master Logging Company based in Jackson that provides custom logging and earth excavating services.
The Appalachian Regional Logger of the Year is selected from the top loggers from 13 states. Earlier this year at the Ohio Forestry Association’s annual meeting Sexton was named Ohio’s Outstanding Logger of the Year. Having been recognized as a regional logger of the year he is now under consideration to be the nation’s top logger.
“Shawn and Will Sexton are first class businessmen and are dedicated to the wise use of our natural resources,” said David Lytle, state forester and chief of the Ohio Division of Forestry. “We are proud to have worked with the Ohio Forestry Association in nominating the Sextons for this award.”
Sexton’s recognition is the first time in eight years that an Ohio logger was selected for the award. Shawn is a past president of the National Honor Society and president of the Future Farmers of America. He is a 1989 graduate of the Buckeye Hill Career Center timber harvesting program. Sexton, his wife Melissa, daughter Morgan, and brother Will reside in Jackson County.
The Outstanding Logger program recognizes outstanding logging contractor performance; promotes competent, professional independent logging contractors in the forestry community; encourages other independent logging contractors to emulate the outstanding performance of the award winners; and improves forester-logger relations by publicly recognizing outstanding logging performance as an essential element of every planned timber harvest.
The Regional Outstanding Logger of the Year is selected and awarded by the Forest Resources Association.
