Ohio Conservation Seedlings FAQ
Here are some answers to frequently asked questions. Information on planting and care, including how to select the right tree, can be found in the Tree Planting Guide (pdf)

Determining number of trees to plant Evergreens- 1,000 seedlings planted at the recommended tree spacing of 8 feet by 8 feet will occupy 1 1/2 acres of ground. Planting spacing for hardwood trees should be a minimum of 8 feet by 8 feet for black locust and European alder. For other hardwood species, the minimum should be 10 feet by 10 feet; 100 trees will occupy 1/4 acre and 1,000 will occupy 2 1/2 acres.

HOW MANY STEMS PER ACRE?
Stems/acre = 43,560/spacing2
Example for 8x8 spacing
43,560/64 = 681 stems
Suggested spacing
Hardwoods 10x10
Confiers 8x8
Christmas Trees 6x6

Size of bundles for pickup All packed seedling bundles are arranged root to root with tops stuck out both ends. A bundle of conifers contains 500 seedlings. A bundle of hardwoods contains 100 seedlings. Depending on the age of the seedlings and the species, this bundle will be from 30 to 36 inches long, approximately 20 inches in diameter, and weigh from 10 to 15 pounds. Contact the Marietta Nursery for large order pickups.

Minimum order is 100 seedlings. Orders less than 100 trees are not accepted.

UPS UPS delivers tree orders fast and efficiently to the address you list on the application. Please write your address clearly. UPS cannot deliver to a post office box. Delivery can be made to a rural route address with box number. Be sure your zip code matches the town listed. Shipping charges are listed on the order form.

Normally trees are shipped on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Trees shipped from the Marietta Nursery via UPS arrive the next day in most cases.

Customers will receive notification cards approximately one week prior to shipment. Weather and/or soil conditions may cause delays in shipping schedules.

Care of seedlings after delivery Upon receipt, open the package immediately. Do not destroy the shipping box or bag. They can be used to carry trees to the planting site. The package should be opened, inspected and the plant roots watered. The roots need to be damp, not soaking wet. Trees should be planted as soon as possible. They may be kept up to one week in an unheated basement or other cool enclosed area at 40-55°F. PLEASE SEE THE PACKING LIST ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE SHIPPING BOX/BAG FOR MORE DETAILED PLANTING DIRECTIONS.

Tax savings Up to $10,000 of regeneration expenses, including seedling cost, labor to plant, controlling interfering vegetation, tree shelters and deer exclosures (fence) qualify for tax deduction as an investment or business expense. For detailed information, visit www.timbertax.org. This is a very good web site; you can even ask questions.

The goal of Marietta Nursery is to provide you with the finest tree seedlings available. All our stock is inspected annually by the Ohio Department of Agriculture and certified to be disease free. Several species we produce; red oak, and Norway spruce have won awards in national nursery stock competitions.

Due to conditions beyond our control, such as ice and snow, wet weather, frozen ground, we may not be able to ship trees as early as we would like. We will do everything we can do at the nursery to ensure timely shipping and arrival of trees.

Replacement Policy Upon receipt of seedlings each customer is responsible for evaluating condition of shipment. If trees appear in poor condition or dead, immediately (within 24 hours) call the nursery or have a Service Forester inspect the stock (you may be requested to return a sampling of the stock in question). Read more about our replacement policy.

Restriction: Seedlings grown and sold by Marietta State Nursery are intended for general reforestation and conservation purposes. No seedlings distributed by the nursery shall be removed and resold with roots attached.
