Description
This butterfly can be identified by its large circular eye-like markings on its ventral hindwings.

Habitat and Habits
The American painted lady inhabits open meadows and fields, gardens, and roadsides. It is first seen on the wing in early spring, but is more common in June. It nectars on dogbane and other milkweeds.

Reproduction and Care of the Young
The larvae of the American painted lady feed on sweet everlasting, pussy-toes, and burdock.
