This species is a common butterfly in urban settings and gardens. It nectars on many flowers and is attracted to mud puddles and animal scat. Most brushfooted butterflies such as the red admiral can be attracted to your backyard by baiting with rotten fruit. It is a fast and erratic flier.

Description
Red admirals are black with orange-red bars across their forewings and on their hindwing border. There are also white spots at the tip of the forewing.

Habitat and Habits
The red admiral inhabits woodland edges, fields near woods, and gardens. It can be found in all 88 Ohio counties.

Reproduction and Care of the Young
The larvae of the red admiral feed on various nettles.
