At a distance, this hawk can be identified by its habit of hovering, much like a kestrel. During this time, it is most likely hunting prey such as lemmings and other small rodents.

Description
This large hawk has long wings and a tail with a dark terminal band and white base. The "wrist" on the underside of the wing is marked with dark coloring.

Habitat and Habits
Rough-legged hawks may be found in and around open plains, agricultural areas, and marshes.

Reproduction and Care of the Young
Breeding takes place in the Arctic tundra. The nest is made of moss and sticks and is usually placed high on a cliff.
