Red-shouldered hawks hunt by patiently waiting, perched in a tree. When they spot their prey, they swiftly drop straight down onto the unsuspecting victim.

Description
These hawks have long, dark wings with white barring and a rusty shoulder. The underparts are paler and barred with a rust color.

Habitat and Habits
Mature deciduous woodlands and swamps are the preferred habitat of red-shouldered hawks.

Reproduction and Care of the Young
Red-shouldered hawks are monogamous and some pairs may even mate for life. Nests are large and deep, placed high in a forest tree. Both parents care for the young, with the male providing most of the food.
