ODNR Division of Wildlife - Wild Resources - Ohio Coastal Training Program

Ohio Coastal Training Program

Coordinating State and Regional Training Resources

The Ohio Coastal Training Program (CTP) is a partnership of four programs that collaborate to conduct research, provide education and manage the natural resources of the Lake Erie coastal region: Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR), Ohio Sea Grant College Program, ODNR Office of Coastal Management, and the Ohio Lake Erie Commission. These programs regularly join forces with non-profit organizations, universities, and other agencies to deliver science-based training to professionals throughout the Lake Erie watershed.

Fostering Collaboration

The Ohio CTP plans and supports events that bring scientists, practitioners, and local decision-makers together to share challenges, innovative science and technologies, and success stories.

Addressing Local Needs

The Ohio CTP surveyed more than two hundred local officials in the Lake Erie watershed about their greatest challenges and training needs related to land use and water quality.  Stormwater, watershed and land use planning, sustainable design, renewable energy, and grant writing were among the top priorities. In response, the Ohio CTP is partnering with others to expand and enhance training in these areas.

Stormwater Engineers and System Designers
Staff and Third Party Service Providers that Review Post-construction BMP Plans for MS4 Programs

Training participants will:

  • Understand how new regulations and impaired watersheds are changing the standard of practice for stormwater design professionals.
  • Understand how different stormwater treatment practices work, how they perform with regard to water quality treatment and runoff reduction, and how they can work together effectively as a system.
  • Discuss technical barriers to implementation of effective stormwatertreatment systems and identify how the technical information and research presented can combine with localresources to better understand and address these barriers.

The UNHSC operates a nationally unique field site at which the performance of stormwater treatment systems is evaluated in a side-by-side setting. Center scientists combine this evaluation with research that targets specific issues in the rapidly evolving field of stormwater management. You can learn more about the center and its work online: http://www.unh.edu/erg/cstev/

This training is made possible through a partnership of the UNHSC, the NOAA Coastal Services Center, the Cooperative Institute for Coastal and Estuarine Environmental Technology, and the National Estuarine Research Reserve System Coastal Training Program. Stormwater professionals from northern Ohio provided input on course design through focus groups and by serving on the planning committee for this event.
