Horace R. Collins Laboratory

Dedicated October 12, 1999, the ODNR Division of Geological Survey Horace R. Collins Laboratory (HRCL) is a multi-use facility located at Alum Creek State Park in Delaware County, Ohio (click here for directions and a map). Core, sample, and 12 other collections are housed at the HRCL repository. One wing of the facility contains laboratories for core and sample description and analysis, petrographic studies, aggregate testing, and sedimentation research. A second wing houses Division of Watercraft Central District offices. The HRCL also headquarters the Ohio Seismic Network and the Lake Erie Data Center.
The HRCL provides citizens, industry personnel, and researchers a climate-controlled environment conducive for the study of repository holdings. Two sample-preparation/analysis laboratories containing examination tables, petrographic and binocular microscopes, and other examination equipment are available. a core splitter, a drill press with core plugging bits, and rock saws are available to assist with the sampling of core and cutting samples for thin sections and other laboratory analyses. HRCL personnel are available to conduct sample preparation and core plugging for a nominal fee.
The classroom/conference room at the HRCL is intended primarily for use by divisions and offices of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Other State of Ohio agencies and employees are welcome to use the classroom/conference room during normal business hours (see below). After-hours and weekend requests to use the classroom/conference room are considered on a case-by-case basis. Only a limited number of after-hours/weekend requests are granted. The HRCL learning center contains visual displays highlighting Ohio geology, rocks, minerals, fossils, and research activities of the Division of Geological Survey. Free publications, maps, and brochures are available.
