Many residents across the state of Ohio felt a 5.2-magnitude earthquake on April 18 at about 5:38 a.m. EDT. No damage was reported from Ohio. This earthquake was felt across the Midwest and is typical of periodic earthquakes that occasionally strike the region. Unlike California, the geology of the mid-continent allows seismic energy to travel great distances. This earthquake was recorded by the Ohio Seismic Network 290 miles from the epicenter and the energy took one to two minutes to reach Ohio.
Ohio recorded a 5.4-magnitude earthquake centered in Shelby County in 1937, which caused considerable damage in town of Anna. A 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck southern Lake County, east of Cleveland in 1986 and caused minor damage. Ohio has experienced more than 200 felt earthquakes since 1776.
