Japanese Scholartree - Sophora japonica
Cincinnati Planted: 1960
Liberty at Republic Site: 5' Square in Sidewalk

1971 Comments:
The trees are globose in shape and appear to be growing very well in a difficult environment. The foliage is very attractive and the flowers in midsummer add considerably to the aesthetic value of the trees.

1997 Comments:
These plants are in 5' x 6' cutouts. Only three plants were in the original planting and all three remain. These plants have done remarkably well considering the severity of the site. Twig extension for the plants was still around 8" per year. These plants originated from seed that has proven to be cold-hardy. The Regent Scholartree is not cold-hardy in Ohio. Seedlings from cold hardy parents are necessary for Ohio planting.

One hundred percent of the overall planting survived (3 of 3 trees).
1997 data on the table are based on three trees.
