Geneva Ohio Earthquake of August 17, 2002

A small earthquake was detected instrumentally by seismograph stations of the Ohio Seismic Network and the Southern Ontario Seismic Network approximately 3 km south west of Geneva, in western Ashtabula County. No one reported feeling the earthquake, which is not surprising considering its magnitude (2.0) and time of day (4:26 a.m). Earthquakes in the 2.0-magnitude range are seldom reported as being felt, unless people are very close to the epicenter and involved in quiet activities. This event is in the general vicinity of several small earthquakes that occurred in the 1990's in neighboring parts of Lake and Geauga Counties.

On January 18, 2003, a small earthquake with a magnitude of 1.5 MN (Geological Survey of Canada) was detected by stations of the Ohio Seismic Network and Geological Survey of Canada at 23:08:44.94 Universal Time. This microearthquake was in the same general vicinity (41.76º N 80.96º W) as the event on August 17. No felt reports were received for the January 18th earthquake.
