THE OHIO COASTAL
MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
Clear space

Ohio Coastal Management Program (OCMP) is a cooperative effort of the state and its political subdivisions to manage coastal resources, control activities that affect them, and foster their sustainable use for the benefit of all citizens of the state. OCMP integrates management of Ohio's Lake Erie coastal area in order to preserve, protect, develop, restore and enhance its valuable and sometimes vulnerable resources.

The Ohio Coastal Management Law (O.R.C. Chapter 1506) designates the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) as the lead agency for the development and implementation of this program. Many partners cooperate in carrying out numerous elements of this program. Within ODNR, fourteen divisions are responsible for administering statutory authorities and other programs related to coastal area resource management. In 2002, ODNR's director created the Office of Coastal Management to be the lead administrator of the OCMP and coordinate the other state and federal agencies who participate in the program. The Division of Geological Survey's Lake Erie Geology Group is responsible for providing geological information and technical assistance to coastal constituents and agencies, identifying and mapping coastal erosion areas, and monitoring the extraction of sand and gravel resources from the bed of Lake Erie.
