Digital Oil and Gas Well-Spot Maps
Clear space

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological Survey now offers computer-generated oil and gas well-spot maps and digital data files containing the locations of all wells on the spot maps. These files represent our continuing efforts to digitally capture the well locations and attributes and to create a new digital base map of the state's land subdivisions. Over 210,000 well locations have been captured for 1,355 Ohio townships. Inmates at two Ohio penal institutions performed the data capture of wells from existing ODNR well-spot maps. Geological Survey staff created the new digital base maps.

Three types of products are available: computer-plotted oil and gas well-spot maps, digital data files of the well-location information, and digital graphics files containing the new land-subdivision information. The computer-plotted maps replace the township-based series currently in use. The maps are at a scale of 1 inch = 1,320 feet and show all wells drilled or permitted in each township. The attributes contained within the digital well files include: state-plane X-Y coordinates [108 KB PDF] and well identifier (permit number, A-number, etc.), initial production, lease number, producing formation, and a well-status code. The digital well files are available on a by-county basis. These files and the new base map files should make it easier for companies wanting to conduct computer-mapping projects.

Paper copies of the maps are available from the Geological Survey's Geologic Records Center at the same cost of the superseded maps, $4.00 per township plus applicable tax and handling charges. To order, call or write the Geologic Records Center, Ohio Geological Survey, 2045 Morse Rd., Bldg. C1, Columbus, OH 43229-6693. Telephone (614) 265-6576. E-mail: . The digital files are available on CD-ROM for $25.00 per CD or can be downloaded free directly from the Survey's FTP site. See links below for access to the FTP.

The Survey is currently updating each township's well inventory to be as complete as possible and editing the digital files. Inquiries on availability, format, content, or the project in general should be directed to Larry Wickstrom at (614) 265-6598, e-mail: .
