By Richard R. Pavey, Dennis N. Hull, C. Scott Brockman, Gregory A. Schumacher, David A. Stith, E. Mac Swinford, Terry L. Sole, Kim E. Vorbau, Kevin D. Kallini, Emily E. Evans, Ernie R. Slucher, and Robert G. Van Horn

GIS and Cartography by Donovan M. Powers

The plot-on-demand, digital Map EG-1 shows areas of known and probable karst terrain, where dissolution processes in carbonate rocks (limestone and dolomite) and gypsum have produced networks of subsurface conduits. Many karst areas have surface expression as sinkholes and caves. Environmental and societal problems related to karst may include ground-water contamination, construction delays, and construction-cost overruns.
