Bedrock Mapping Activities
The Geologic Mapping Group achieved a milestone by completing a seven-year program of remapping the bedrock geology of the state of Ohio. Begun in 1990, the purpose of the program was to replace the 1920 bedrock-geology map of the state. The program was funded through a severance tax on mineral industries and the oil and gas industry, but also had significant financial support from the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the Ohio Department of Transportation.
The Geologic Mapping Group produced 788 bedrock-geology maps, about 780 bedrock-topography maps, and about 1,840 structure-contour maps at a scale of 1:24,000. These maps form a uniform set of geologic maps at 1:24,000 scale across the state. All of these maps are on open file in the Survey's Geologic Records Center and have become popular items for technical and nontechnical users interested in the geology of Ohio. Currently, these maps are being compiled in order to generate a soon-to-be-released new statewide bedrock-geology map and cross section of Ohio at a scale of 1:500,000.
