Geologists, educators, land-use planners and others interested in the state's earth science can now obtain a digital version of the Bedrock Geologic Map of Ohio, which was released by ODNR in paper form last year. This is the first time the map has been available to the public on CD-ROM.

Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Department and Elm Grove Volunteer Fire Department in Pike County recently received Firewise Hazard Mitigation Grants through the ODNR Division of Forestry. Jackson Township VFD received a $5,190 grant and Elm Grove VFD received $3,100.

ODNR recently purchased 214 acres on Little Darby Creek in Madison County as an additional measure of protection for this state and national scenic river. The Madison County Commissioners will manage the acreage as parkland, under a lease agreement with ODNR.

The Buzzard Cave Trail at Lake Hope State Park in Vinton County is again dressed in 50,000 lights for the annual "Holiday Trail of Lights" event. Animated displays, decorated trees and landscapes dot the quarter-mile trail, which is adjacent to the park's nature center. Access to the "Holiday Trail of Lights" is free.

Ohio hunters took 103,195 white-tailed deer during the state’s popular, weeklong deer-gun season, which ran November 26 to December 2, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. In 2006, hunters killed a preliminary total of 111,672 deer during the same time period.
