Lawrence Woods to Host NatureCache Event
Outdoor series sponsored by Gander Mountain and ODNR
COLUMBUS, OH – NatureCache is coming to Hardin County. This new series combines naturalist-led interpretive hikes with global positioning system (GPS) technology. The final NatureCache hike of 2009 is scheduled for Lawrence Woods State Nature Preserve on Saturday, October 3 at 10 a.m.
The 1,035-acre Lawrence Woods harbors one of the largest known mature forests in northwest Ohio. In addition to the variety of hardwood trees found here, the preserve protects high quality buttonbush swamps. Several rare plants including heart-leaf plantain and grove sandwort are protected here as well.
Suitable for the entire family, this event will introduce participants to virtual geocaching, an activity encouraged at a number of Ohio state nature preserves. Armed with demonstration GPS units, visitors will have an opportunity to learn more about geocaching while enjoying a naturalist-led tour along an accessible boardwalk trail.
Lawrence Woods State Nature Preserve is located at 13278 County Road 190 in Taylor Creek Township. For directions, please call the preserve office at 419-445-1775.
NatureCache 2009 is sponsored by Gander Mountain Company, the nation’s largest retail network of stores for hunting, fishing, camping, boating, marine, and outdoor lifestyle products and services, in conjunction with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ (ODNR) Division of Natural Areas and Preserves.
Pre-registration is strongly encouraged but not necessary to attend. All pre-registered participants (over the age of 18) will be entered into a prize drawing for two Garmin GPS units, compliments of Gander Mountain.
