Shallenberger State Nature Preserve to Host Wildflower Hike

COLUMBUS, OH - A guided wildflower hike will be held Sunday, April 19 at Shallenberger State Nature Preserve, as part of the Natural Areas Discovery Series, sponsored by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Natural Areas and Preserves.

The Fairfield County preserve will host an early spring wildflower walk at 1 p.m. The hike will feature the variety of spring blooms seen along the preserve's trails. Appropriate for the whole family, this walk will last about two hours.

Dozens of wildflower species may be found at Shallenberger, but several are found in great abundance. By the end of the hike, species such as wild ginger, hepatica, trillium, jack-in-the-pulpit, toothwort, mayapple and bloodroot should be easily recognized. Perhaps just as interesting as the flowers is the geology of the preserve. The site features Allen Knob, an outcrop of Black Hand sandstone that stands 200 feet above the nearby valley.

The Natural Areas Discovery Series features scheduled hikes and interpretive activities at selected state nature preserves from April to October. The monthly programs are free and open to the public. For more information about the Discovery Series visit www.ohiodnr.com, or for specific information about the Shallenberger State Nature Preserve event, call 740-380-8919.

Children who hike with their families during the special event and throughout the year can receive credit towards the ODNR Explore the Outdoors Hike a Trail activity. Explore the Outdoors is a hands-on family program that gives Ohio children the opportunity to reunite with nature, improve their physical and emotional health and discover the rewards of becoming environmental stewards. Program information and downloadable activity guides can be found at www.exploretheoutdoorsohio.com.
