Division of Watercraft Announces Local Marine Patrol Grant Awards

COLUMBUS, OH
- Grants administered by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Watercraft have been awarded to 26 local marine patrol units in a continued effort to help keep Ohio's waterways safe and enhance recreational boaters' experiences on the water.

The 2009 Marine Patrol Assistance Grants will help local law enforcement agencies provide emergency response to boating-related accidents, conduct routine patrols on area waterways and purchase safety equipment for use on marine patrol vessels. Funding of the program comes from the Waterways Safety Fund, which largely is comprised of a share of the state motor fuels tax, watercraft registration and titling fees and funding from the U.S. Coast Guard.

A total of $539,276 in grants will be awarded this year. Nine of the marine patrol units are located on Lake Erie and are receiving $211,973, or 39 percent of the total grant awards. Two marine patrol units are located on the Ohio River and collectively receiving $33,123, while 15 marine patrol units are located on inland waters and are receiving a combined $294,180, or 55 percent of the total grant program allocation.
