ODNR Awards Grants to Drive More Scrap Tire Recycling

COLUMBUS, OH - The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), through its Scrap Tire Grant program, will help Ohio schools and government agencies to implement innovative ways to put old tires to good use.

The Scrap Tire Grant Program will provide four agencies with funding for civil engineering projects as well as manufacturing and processing projects that will utilize recycled tire material, reducing the amount of discarded scrap tire waste. Grant amounts are dependent upon the amount of recycled tires being utilized.

Grant Applicant County Cooperating Enterprise Recommended Grant Amount
Henry Co. SWMD Henry NA $75,000
Stark/Tuscarawas/Wayne SWMD Stark Liberty Tire Service $350,000
OH Dept. of Transportation Multiple NA $350,000
Maplewood Local School District Trumbull NA $75,000

The Scrap Tire Grant Program is funded through a fee on tires at the point of purchase. Ohio has begun to address its backlog of scrap tires, which had led to health and environmental concerns statewide. The program has successfully lessened the backlog in recent years, while putting those used and abandoned tires to good use in a variety of innovative ways.

Businesses, nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, municipalities and solid waste management districts are eligible for the grants. A match of at least 100 percent is required.

Previous scrap tire grants have funded projects such as ground tire repaving efforts, creation of tire-derived fuel to power industrial boilers and power plants and the purchase of scrap tires processing equipment.

The ODNR Division of Recycling & Litter Prevention is responsible for implementing statewide waste reduction, recycling, recycling market development and litter prevention programs.  The division encourages Ohioans to reduce waste, recycle materials, and buy recycled-content products.  For more information, visit www.ohiodnr.com.
