Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserve Hosts Dunes Hike

Natural Areas Discovery Series events are suitable for the entire family

Headlands Dune State Nature PreserveMENTOR, OH - A hike along Ohio's best coastal dunes will be held on Saturday, June 20 at 2 p.m. at Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserve, which is located at the far east end of Headlands Beach State Park.

The naturalist-led hike will give visitors a chance to look beyond the shores of a Lake Erie beach and learn to identify some of the unique flora and fauna found there. Many rare plants, such as sea rocket, beach pea, beach grass and seaside spurge, are not found growing naturally farther inland.

Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserve protects one of the last and best beach dune communities in Ohio. It is an isolated Great Lakes version of the extensive sand dune shoreline communities found along the Atlantic coast. Additionally, this 25-acre preserve protects one of the best sites in Ohio for bird watching during migration in the spring and fall.

Children who hike with their families during the special event and throughout the year can receive credit towards the ODNR Explore the Outdoors Hike a Trail activity. Explore the Outdoors is a hands-on family program that gives Ohio children the opportunity to reunite with nature, improve their physical and emotional health and discover the rewards of becoming environmental stewards. Program information and downloadable activity guides can be found at www.exploretheoutdoorsohio.com.

Sponsored by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Natural Areas and Preserves, the Natural Areas Discovery Series features scheduled hikes, interpretive activities and an opportunity for visitors to meet preserve staff. Programs are held from April to October.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR web site at www.ohiodnr.com.
