Tree Farm Open House to Showcase Premier Forest Management Practices
COLUMBUS, OH – A Holmes County family that has received statewide recognition for promoting the growth of renewable forest resources on private land and demonstrating exceptional environmental stewardship will host an open house at their tree farm on September 26.
Bob Hunter, who was this year honored as Ohio Tree Farmer of the Year by Ohio Tree Farm Committee, will welcome visitors at his family’s tree farm in Holmes County near Glenmont Saturday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. The tour will showcase forest management practices while offering learning opportunities through a variety of seminars and programs provided throughout the day.
As part of the open house, there will be a variety of seminars, demonstrations and displays for all ages. They will feature ODNR service foresters, Hunter family tree farmers, consulting foresters, industry and agency foresters, wildlife and prairie specialists and educators.
The tour will highlight three distinct aspects of the Hunter Family Tree Farm: the multigenerational character of the tree farm; several family projects within the tree farm; and a sample of a tour through the tree farm that has been offered to public groups for 15 years.
Seminars in the field will include timber salvaging, reforestation/pine plantations, horse logging, band mill lumber sawing, crop tree treatments, tree identification, tree trimming and Project Learning Tree educational activities. Other programs will include furbearer trapping, Ohio natural prairies, wildlife management, directional tree felling, stream study, mature pine utilization, direct seeding, edible/non-edible woodland plants, timber marking, insect identification and pond study.
The Hunter Family Tree Farm is located at 12061 TR 252, Glenmont, Ohio. From State Route 520 just east of Glenmont, take CR 51 north to TR 252. Turn right on TR 252 and travel southeast to farm.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR web site at www.ohiodnr.com.
