ODNR Watercraft Staff Members Receive National Recognition
COLUMBUS, OH – Three current Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Watercraft employees and one former employee were honored by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) for their service to the nation’s boaters.
The NASBLA Boating Safety Award was presented to Rick Barrera, of Somerset, who is manager of the ODNR Division of Watercraft Registration and Titling section. The award recognizes a state or local government official, other than a boating law administrator, who is involved in boating safety and has demonstrated outstanding performance in any area of managing a boating program. Barrera is a graduate of the Central Ohio Technical College and joined the Division of Watercraft in 1980.
Barrera’s recognition marks the fourth time a Division of Watercraft employee has received the NASBLA Boating Safety Award since its inception in 1992. Emily King (2008, 1998), manager of the Division’s Public Information and Education Section, and Pamela Dillon (1993), who then served as a boating safety specialist and now is chief of the Division, also are among previous NASBLA Boating Safety Award winners.
Division of Watercraft data analyst Tammy Terry, of Amanda, received the NASBLA President’s Award. The President’s Award provides recognition to an individual who has made special contributions during the past year to NASBLA and to boating safety. She is a graduate of The Ohio State University and has worked for ODNR since 1996 with positions in the divisions of Forestry, Wildlife and Watercraft. Barrera (2007) and former Division employee Nancy Gogle (2006) had previously received the honor.
Melissa Kocher, of Wilmington, who in January was promoted from state watercraft officer to supervisor of the Division’s Springfield area office, was recipient of Leroy Orvis Memorial Award from the Northern Association of Boating Administrators (NABA). The award recognizes exemplary public service in providing boating safety education services to boaters.
NABA also recognized former Ohio watercraft officer Dave Goodwin, of Woodville, as Officer of the Year. Goodwin was assigned to the Division’s Sandusky area office and recently accepted a position with the Department of Homeland Security U.S. Border Patrol. Goodwin, who was also Ohio’s 2008 Watercraft Officer of the Year, is a graduate of The Ohio State University and was employed at ODNR 1999-2009.
