Community Boating Education Safety Programs Receive
Funding Assistance Through Waterways Safety Fund
COLUMBUS, OH – In 2010, Ohioans of all ages will have numerous opportunities to participate in community boating safety education programs statewide because of funding assistance from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Watercraft.
A total of 30 organizations will receive grant assistance to support local jobs and boating safety education programs. Individual grants range from $1,865 to $25,425.
Grant award recipients include Bowling Green State University, Baldwin Wallace College, Bay Village Schools, and the Wellington School and Oakstone Academy in Franklin County. Additionally, local park districts in Cuyahoga, Erie, Franklin, Hamilton, Lake and Summit counties will also receive grant funding. A complete listing of grant award recipients, Ohio’s boating programs and facilities can be obtained online at www.ohiodnr.com.
Boating Safety Education grants are funded through the Waterways Safety Fund, which is administered by the Division of Watercraft. The fund is comprised of a share of the state motor fuel tax, watercraft registration and titling fees and funding from the U.S. Coast Guard.
The Division of Watercraft is mandated by state law to provide boating education programs. To accomplish its mission, the division provides a variety of funding assistance to local communities and organizations. In 2009, more than 13,000 Ohioans successfully completed an approved boating safety education program. More Ohioans participated in various boating skills programs, such as basic canoe and kayak paddling classes, offered by the division’s boating education partners.
Ohio law requires any person born on or after January 1, 1982 to be able to show proof they have successfully completed a boating safety education course which is approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators. Dedicated to providing education assistance through innovative approaches, the Division of Watercraft has helped establish an Ohio boating safety education system which has led to a significant reduction in boating-related fatalities during its 50 years of service.
The Department of Natural Resources ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR web site at www.ohiodnr.com.
