Gambier Resident Named To Waterways Safety Council
COLUMBUS – Douglas Mclarnan, of Gambier, was recently appointed by Governor Ted Strickland to serve a five-year term on the Ohio Waterways Safety Council, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Watercraft. He replaces Ann Swain, of East Sparta, whose term expired in January.
Mclarnan is a retired social worker supervisor for the Knox County Childrens Services Department. He also served in the College Township Fire Department as a firefighter, EMT, rescue diver and swift water rescue specialist. In 1995, Mclarnan was appointed as the first commissioner of the Knox County Park District and became the district’s operations manager in 2003. In 2000, he was elected as a trustee of College Township.
He has worked on various environmental awareness issues, including Ohio’s first state water trail on the Kokosing River in 2006. Mclarnan is an accomplished paddler and also has worked assignments in support of whitewater competition events held during the 1996 Olympics.
Mclarnan is joined on the Waterways Safety Council by its chairman J. Thomas Pascoe, of Sandusky, and fellow members Chad Taylor of Wilmington, and John Onacila Jr., of Cleveland. The five-member citizen advisory council, appointed by the Governor, provides input on boating issues to the Division of Watercraft.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR web site at www.ohiodnr.com
