COLUMBUS, OH— To recognize National Safe Boating Week and promote the importance of wearing approved life jackets, 85 people participated in the “Inflatable Life Jacket World Record Inflation Day” at the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ (ODNR) headquarters in Columbus today.

Coordinated by ODNR’s Division of Watercraft, the participants simultaneously inflated their life jackets to help set an unprecedented world record. Other Ohio locations hosting similar events included Grandview Heights, also in Franklin County, and Cleveland.

“We believe that a good boating experience is a safe one and boating safety begins with the choices boaters make before leaving the dock, such as wearing an approved life jacket,” said Pam Dillon, chief of the Division of Watercraft.

This World Record Day is helping to promote National Safe Boating week, which begins May 22 and runs through May 28. The goal of National Safe Boating week is to educate and inform the boating public about boating safety, specifically the importance of life jackets. The use of inflatable life jackets has been the main focus in recent years.
