Meetings Scheduled for Release of Lake Erie Erosion Control Recommendations for Ashtabula County

SANDUSKY, OH – In an on-going effort to assist owners of property along Ohio’s Lake Erie coast, three meetings have been scheduled to release recommendations for the management and control of erosion in Ashtabula County.

The recommendations are part of the Lake Erie Shore Erosion Management Plan (LESEMP),  which is being developed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) through a partnership between its Office of Coastal Management and divisions of Wildlife and Geological Survey.

The LESEMP outlines the most likely means of successful erosion control based on reach-specific erosion issues, geology and habitat. Reaches are stretches of shore with similar site conditions. The objective of the reach-based approach to erosion control is to simplify the decision process while enhancing the effectiveness of solutions to erosion-related issues.

The complete set of LESEMP recommendations for all reaches in Ashtabula County will be presented at each of the following meetings:

Property owner input has been integral throughout the development of the LESEMP. The recommendations, which may be voluntarily adopted, are based on feedback and information obtained from a variety of sources, most notably those who live and work along the coast of Ashtabula County. After completing the reaches in Ashtabula County, the LESEMP will continue to be developed in other lakeshore areas of Ohio.

LESEMP is offered as technical assistance to property owners to identify the causes of erosion in their area and ways in which coastal erosion issues can be addressed.  The program does not contain any regulatory oversight provisions.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR Web site at www.ohiodnr.com.
