ODNR Approves Grants To Fund Trail Improvements
COLUMBUS - The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Parks and Recreation will provide grant funding to 20 organizations that will develop and improve trails throughout the state.
“We want to help Ohioans maximize their enjoyment in the outdoors, and we can do that by funding important trail projects and improving accessibility for all,” said ODNR Director Sean Logan. “These projects will create and maintain safe, accessible recreation areas that citizens value.”
ODNR has approved projects totaling $1.36 million for the Fiscal Year 2010 Recreational Trails Program Non-Motorized Grants. All of the projects are associated with a regional or statewide trail system, which will be used to develop 15.186 miles of new trail, 28.3 miles of existing trail restoration, two observation decks, two Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant trailheads, and the acquisition of .684 acres of greenway corridors.
Due to limited funding available for non-motorized recreation, a $150,000 ceiling was established for individual awards.
Four motorized projects were also approved for funding out of the 2010 Recreational Trails Program. Funding for these projects total $513,633, which will be used to construct and maintain motorized recreational trails in the Wayne National Forest and various state forests managed by ODNR.
The Recreational Trails Program is sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration and aims to expand the statewide network of trails by supporting local communities’ planning, development and maintenance of local trail facilities.
