ODNR, Division of Mineral Resources Management will hold its 3rd Annual Ohio Mine Safety Competition September 29.

Ohio Mine Safety Training Center to Host Mine Safety Competition

Memorial dedication and renaming of training center to honor Jerry L. Stewart

COLUMBUS, OH - The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Mineral Resources Management (DMRM) will hold its 3rd Annual Ohio Mine Safety Competition at the state-of-the-art Mine Safety Training Center in Cadiz at 8 a.m., September 29.

A memorial dedication will conclude the event at approximately 4 p.m. to honor the late Jerry L. Stewart, who passed away in May of 2010.  The Mine Safety Training Center will be renamed in honor of Stewart—a veteran DMRM employee who spent much of his career advocating safety in Ohio mines, and was a strong supporter of mine-rescue training.

During the competition, each team will complete two rescue drills. One will be in the training center’s new mine simulator, which will be filled with smoke, and the second will be set up outdoors. The teams will be assigned the same emergency problem and will be evaluated by state and federal mine inspectors on their procedures and speed. Two courses will run simultaneously and teams will be sequestered until it is their turn to compete.

“Ohio’s Mine Safety Training Center was designed to provide mine rescuers and mine workers with a facility where they can conduct training exercises that will help keep them safe on the job,” said ODNR Director Sean Logan. “Such training enhances mine safety, reinforces accident prevention programs and, in turn, strengthens Ohio’s mining industry.”

The public is welcome to attend the competition. Participating rescue teams will represent the following coal mines:
  • Alliance Coal Company
  • American Energy Corporation
  • Buckingham Coal Company
  • Gatling Coal, LLC
  • Hopedale Mining, LLC
  • Ohio Valley Coal Company
  • Rosebud Mining Company
  • Sterling Mining Corporation
ODNR is partnering with the Federal Mine Safety and Health Administration, Pennsylvania Bureau of Deep Mine Safety and West Virginia Office of Miners Health, Safety and Training to stage the event.

The Ohio Mine Safety Competition will count toward one of the two federally required mine safety and rescue programs that miners must annually complete.

The Mine Safety Training Center has two 158’ x 200’ simulated mines that provide a venue for vital hands-on training. There are also four classrooms onsite, which allow DMRM staff to conduct informative training sessions regarding the Ohio mining industry and mine safety.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR web site at www.ohiodnr.com.
